Ingrid Scheffer. The Return of Polaroids.
Scheffer, Ingrid . The Return of Polaroids: A Braunschweig Museum für Photographie exhibition: Polaroids inspire contemporary artists. 06/2005 (concerning 'The Polaroid Gesture: On the uses of a photographic technique' exhibition, originating from a symposium held at the The Braunschweig School of Fine Arts in 2004). http://www.goethe.de/kue/bku/thm/en720822.htm:
The current show brings together over 300 photos... The sheer variety goes to show how easily artists overcome the supposed limitations of the Polaroid technique.
Instant photos resemble performances in that they are unreproducible instants. But unlike the silent spectator of a performance, a Polaroid photographer comes centre-stage with his apparatus, the clatter it makes and the prints sliding out. The white borders suggest a "cropping" of perception, negating any claim to represent reality, says Jung.
Pauleit points out, Polaroids have a separate physical existence from the apparatus. What's more, you have to grasp the print ejected from the mouth of the camera – one of the "Polaroid Gestures".
A book was also produced in conjunction with the exhibition: Meike Kröncke, Barbara Lauterbach, Rolf F. Nohr (eds.): Polaroid als Geste – über die Gebrauchsweisen einer fotografischen Praxis. Hatje Cantz Verlag Ostfildern. 2005.
Currently, I can locate one copy on abebooks.com in Germany and it appears that the text itself is in German. This does seem to be an important book on the Polaroid, especially in relation to performance, as a number of the quotes above indicate. If anyone has any additional information on this please do leave a comment or email.
